The GCISD Reads initiative is designed to build a love of reading in students - encouraging them to read a large quantity and a wide variety of books. Who: GCISD students, teachers, and parents are invited to participate. What: Students will work toward the goal of reading a total of: K-2 Students: 1,500 pages 3-5 Students: 2,500 pages 6-12 Students: 5,000 pages Reading from some basic genre categories will be expected, but title choice will be up to readers. Books of any length are encouraged. Students should read at least one book from each of the categories below: Fiction (realistic fiction, fantasy, mystery, historical fiction, etc...) Non-fiction (informational, biography, autobiography, etc...) Poetry Graphic Novel An award winning book E-book (in order to meet the challenge, students must read at least one e-book) Audiobooks are suitable both for students who choose to read this way and for those in need of accommodations.
When: Between June 1, 2016 and May 1, 2017. Where: Reading can take place inside or outside of school using paper or electronic materials. Why: Students who read more do better in school, have wider vocabularies, and have a lifelong habit enabling them to continue learning beyond their K-12 education. How: Students will keep track of their reading on a log that notes the title, # of pages, genre, and date completed. Click here for possible recording forms.
